“It is completely down. There is not a wall standing.”
People say they could hear the sound for miles around when an explosion destroyed the Methodist church on Highway 421 in Campbellsburg, Ky.
Officials don’t have a definite cause for the explosion but they do know what happened in the moments leading up to it: about an hour beforehand, a worker ruptured a gas line about 30 feet from the church.
The explosion happened shortly after.
“Gas has been cut off. There’s no gas service in the area right now. To my knowledge there’s no hazard to anybody, just we’re in the get the fire out, clean up the investigation mode,” says Kentucky State Trooper Greg Larimore.

The blast occurred around 2:30 p.m. EDT, police said.
